This site has been built to honour the wonderful life of an east-end girl, Barbara Emily Cleere. She was born into a world which had already been at war for over three years and would experience a further three years before peace was finally achieved.
'Barb' as she would become fondly known by a loving extended family (Ivy and Ted her mum and dad, brothers Roy and Roger and Nan and Grandad who lived upstairs), grew up and thrived in the east-end.
She left school at 16 and started a successful secretarial career initially at a local firm and later with a marketing company in the west end. She loved the buzz of the west end and would continue to be drawn back there all of her life. She met her husband-to-be when she was 17 and after a whirlwind courtship of 5 years, she married Paddy.
When they lived in Collier Row, Barb fell pregnant with their first child Cathy and she had to stop work. They later started to rent a house in Woodford Green and subsequently purchased the house from the local authority. The family having grown with the birth of son Robert, continued to live in this house for 32 wonderful, family filled years..
As the children grew older Barb started another successful career, in local government. She was never happier than when she was helping people, so this was the perfect role for her. Her loving heart and colourful, fun personality made her a favourite with her Bosses and colleagues alike.
She loved stylish Clothes and shoes and had a massive scarf collection! she passed that love of all things 'chic' onto her daughter, Cathy. She was very creative and loved flower arranging and dressmaking.
When the children had left home, Barb and Paddy sold their long time house and moved to Basildon where they lived for 20 years.
Barb reluctantly retired when she reached 65. She would have worked for many more years given the opportunity. Having retired however, She joined the WI and made lots of close friends. She also became involved with a local charity and threw herself into their big summer and winter events. In her element, organising and rallying support for such a worthy cause.
Barb started to slow down when ill health gave her challenges she needed to battle. Paddy stood by her side every step of the way and was her rock in her final years!
A decline in health and the need for more specialised support resulted in Barb having to move into The Okeley Care Home in Chelmsford. The lovely team were charmed by her smiles and her bravery!
After celebrating her 80th Birthday with her family. Sadly our beautiful, strong 'Barb' passed away on the 1st December 2022.
She leaves a devastated but thankful family who are blessed to have been touched by her never ending love and support. xxx
